National Peanut Cluster Day

National Peanut Cluster Day

National Peanut Cluster Day celebrates a confection that balances savoury crunch with sweet, melty chocolate. Peanut clusters are typically made by mixing roasted peanuts with melted chocolate or caramel, then dropping spoonfuls onto parchment to set. The concept of combining nuts and sweets is ancient – nut brittles date back to Persia and Greece – but chocolate‑covered nut clusters gained commercial popularity in the early 20th century. In 1912 Nashville’s Standard Candy Company introduced the Goo Goo Cluster, a round cluster of peanuts, marshmallow nougat and caramel enrobed in chocolate. It was the first combination candy bar sold in America and paved the way for Baby Ruth, Snickers and other nutty bars. Peanut clusters can be customised with milk, dark or white chocolate, with add‑ins like toffee bits or sea salt. To celebrate, toast a batch of peanuts to intensify their flavour, melt chocolate slowly over a double boiler, stir in the nuts and spoon mounds onto wax paper. Allow them to cool until glossy and firm, then enjoy the satisfying contrast of creamy chocolate and crunchy peanuts. Each bite pays tribute to candy makers who turned simple ingredients into enduring treats.
